Elizabeth Treharne of Toms River
The 59-year-old woman swept out to sea at Island Beach State Park on Monday night has been identified.
About 11:05 a.m., a New Jersey State Police Aviation Unithelicopter discovered the body of Elizabeth Treharne of Toms River in the water near Area 21. According to Larry Hajna, a spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection, the incident occurred on Tuesday.
According to the US Coast Guard, Treharne was at the beach with her husband when she stepped into the ocean alone and was swept away from the shoreline, most likely by a rip current.
At 8:20 p.m., the victim's husband reported the event to New Jersey State Park Police, saying his wife had gone swimming south of the A22 portion of the park, according to Hajna.
By boat and aircraft, search and rescue crews looked for her.
The search was called off at 11:59 p.m. on Monday and restarted early the next day.
