Body Has Been Recovered

Officials said that the search for the missing 59-year-old woman at Island Beach State Park has come to an end after her body was discovered.

A spokesperson at the Department of Environmental Protection said the body was discovered at 11:05 a.m.

A call regarding a missing woman was received late Monday afternoon, according to a US Coast Guard spokesperson.

According to a spokeswoman for the DEP, which controls State Park Police, a man claimed that his wife had gone into the water and not returned. He said the missing woman was reported to New Jersey State Park Police about 8:20 p.m.

The Coast Guard said a small boat from the Barnegat Inlet Station and a helicopter from the Atlantic City Air Station assisted in the search yesterday, which was called off around dusk.

The search was continued overnight by the Coast Guard cutter Sea Hawk, which has a "more robust crew" and generally more strong assets, according to a Coast Guard spokesman.

The search resumed Tuesday at 8 a.m., according to a DEP spokesperson.

The search was assisted by the United States Coast Guard, State Park Police, New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit, Berkeley Township Police, Ocean Beach Fire Department, Seaside Park Fire Department, Seaside Heights Fire Department, Lavallette Fire Department, and the Ocean County Sheriff's Office.
