Members of the Manchester Township Police Department responded to the Harry Wright Lake on Monday, June 6, 2022, at around 4:16 p.m. for a complaint of a missing swimmer/possible submersion.

Officers and rescue professionals arrived and obtained more information, which revealed that three male swimmers had become exhausted while attempting to swim from one side of the lake to the other. Santos Chacon-Hernandez, 35, Rojelio Chacon, 43, and Ever Mejia-Chacon, 27, all of Lakewood Township, were confirmed as the swimmers.

Good Samaritans who saw Rojelio and Ever in trouble helped them reach the shore. Santos, on the other hand, became immersed underwater and was unable to be found. Members of the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department and the Manchester Career Fire Department eventually found him and rescued him from beneath the surface.

Santos was transferred to Community Medical Center by Manchester EMS and RWJ paramedics after life-saving measures were implemented. Rojelio was brought to Community Medical Center by Manchester EMS for additional evaluation, despite being aware and cognizant on the scene. Ever did not require any further medical attention.

Santos was pronounced dead at Community Medical Center this morning about 5:00 a.m., according to Community Medical Center employees. The Manchester Township Police Investigations Bureau is looking into this event. According to preliminary findings, the drowning was unintentional.

Swimming across Harry Wright Lake is prohibited, and swimming or bathing is only permitted while lifeguards are present, according to the Manchester Township Police Department. For everyone's safety, the Manchester Township Police Department urges residents to follow these township ordinances.
