At the Jersey Shore, a number of people drowned, and one man remains missing.
Several people drowned over the Labor Day weekend, bringing tragedy to the Jersey Shore.
The search for a 31-year-old man who vanished Sunday in the ocean at Seaside Park was still ongoing Monday by state police.
Police rescued more than a dozen swimmers from choppy waters in Seaside Park and Belmar. On Monday afternoon, authorities were still looking for a man who went missing in the ocean off Seaside Park.
The majority of recent drownings took place after the guards had left for the day. The drownings were caused in part by choppy surf at the beaches.
At Seaside Park on Monday, red flags warned beachgoers of the perilous
rip currents. Beaches will experience rough waves at least through Tuesday.
Most beaches won't have lifeguards on duty after Labor Day. And there might be skeleton workers on some beaches. Beachgoers are advised against entering the ocean unless a lifeguard is present.
Rip currents can be dangerous even for skilled swimmers whose instinct when caught being pulled by a current is often to try to swim back towards the shore, increasing the chances of drowning.
Since at least last Tuesday, the National Weather Service had issued a warning about "a high risk for the development of dangerous rip currents for the New Jersey and Delaware Beaches".
According to a statement from the
Beach Haven Police Department, three people were swimming in Beach Haven on Sunday afternoon when they got caught in a rip current.
A 22-year-old man was reportedly declared dead, while two of them were safely taken to shore.
According to the statement, during the attempted rescue, roughly 15 lifeguards formed a chain and started systematically looking for the one victim who had been submerged.
The man who was declared dead was located with additional assistance from local and state authorities, according to the police department.
A few hours later, five swimmers in Seaside Park who were caught in rip currents were saved by lifeguards, according to the
Seaside Park Police Department.
Search attempts were under way for a missing 31-year-old male who was swimming apart from the group, according to police.
