Toms River Men Sentenced to Decades in State Prison For Murder and Attempted Murder
According to the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, a Toms River man who was convicted of murder in connection with a shooting in 2020 was given a 50-year sentence in the New Jersey State Prison (NJSP).
Javon Cutler was shot and killed in Toms River on October 11, 2020, and Leyron Jones, 26, of Toms River, was earlier convicted guilty of murder.
In connection with the same shooting death, Jones' co-defendant Daivon Sullivan, 21, also of Toms River, received a 40-year NJSP term.
The No Early Release Act (NERA) regulations apply to the sentences, so both inmates must complete at least 85% of their terms of imprisonment before being considered eligible for release.
Due to their convictions for Attempted Murder in relation to a second victim, Jones and Sullivan were also sentenced to 10 years NJSP, which is also subject to NERA. These sentences will run concurrently with the ones they received for their murder convictions.
Jones and Sullivan were also found guilty of unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the same shooting event, and the judge sentenced them to five years NJSP with a 42-month period of parole ineligibility.
Finally, Sullivan received a 10-year NJSP term after being found guilty of attempted murder of a third victim; this sentence will serve concurrently with the others.
After a three-week jury trial, Jones and Sullivan were found guilty on all the aforementioned offenses on August 17, 2023.
Javon Cutler, 19, of Bayville, and two pals were leaving the Toms River Apartments on the evening of October 11, 2020, when their car was shot at. Cutler was struck in the head as a result. He was taken right away for medical attention to
Community Medical Center. He was then taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center, where he passed away on October 14, 2020 as a result of his wounds.
The results of the inquiry showed that Sullivan, Jones, and Shadrach Correa, a third defendant from Toms River who is 21 years old, conspired to commit the shooting.
On October 28, 2020, all three defendants were accused of being involved in Cutler's murder. Correa had been detained in the Ocean County Jail since October 23, 2020 for an unrelated offense; Sullivan and Jones were hauled into custody on October 29, 2020, and have been detained there ever since.
On April 24, Correa entered a plea of guilty to the charges of unlawful weapon possession and conspiracy to commit murder. The date of Correa's sentencing has not yet been decided. The Court will have discretion over Correa's sentence.
