Excessive Snow Accumulation
The Ceiling has collapsed At the Bennett Sports Complex on Hooper Avenue at Intermediate East due to excessive snow accumulation.
Toms River schools officials said the Bennett Indoor Athletic Complex roof is being fully deflated, but so far there were no obvious tears.
The blizzard that dumped more than 2 feet of snow on Ocean County Saturday caused the Bubble in Toms River to partially collapse.
Officials with the Toms River Regional School District acknowledged that a photo circulating on social media platforms of the interior of the John Bennett Indoor Athletic Complex on Hooper Avenue was taken Saturday and that the partial collapse is being addressed.
"The John Bennett Athletic Complex Bubble has been harmed by the accumulation of ice, snow, and wind, as well as the pressure these elements have produced," Michael Kenny, a district spokesman, stated in an email Saturday afternoon.
The National Weather Service reported that Toms River had gotten at least 14 inches of snow.
"We were quickly aware of the danger since we monitor the Bubble during storms like this," he explained.
He added the district had already talked with the building department's inspector, the Toms River Fire Department, and the team from Asati, the Bubble's maker and designer.
"So far, no rips or tears have been recorded," Kenny said, "although it's difficult to correctly quantify at this moment due to the weather."
Officials were deflating the Bubble in phases, according to Kenny, and it was scheduled to be completely deflated by late Saturday afternoon.
"We do plan to reinflate the structure whenever the weather and structure are considered safe," Kenny said.
During Superstorm Sandy, when heavy winds and power shortages caused a tear in the ceiling when it snagged on a scoreboard, the Bubble collapsed and was severely damaged. It was restored and back in service in early January 2013.
