Fire in Holiday City Section of Toms River

According to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, a fire that injured two persons at a home in Holiday City on Sunday was declared accidental.

Linda Summerton, 73, and Ricky McMurry, 73, have been identified as the victims, according to Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

Officials said first responders discovered them unconscious in a residence in the Silverton district, with extensive burns.

Summerton was stable on Tuesday at the Burn Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, while McMurry was classified in critical condition, according to Billhimer.

Authorities said three firefighters and a police officer received minor injuries and were treated on the site.

Billhimer stated the fire was started by careless smoking while oxygen was being used, according to an investigation by the prosecutor's office's Major Crime Unit-Arson Squad, the Ocean County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, and the Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention.
