According to the Asbury Park Press, a local handyman hired to perform maintenance at a family's township house was charged with aggravated sexual abuse on their child.

The parents of the girl, who police say is under the age of 13, reported the attack on April 11.

According to Jackson Police Capt. Steve Laskiewicz, the handyman, Carlos Morales-Cortes, 27, of Jackson, is accused of stroking the child's buttocks and exposing himself to her before making personal contact with his genitals.

Laskiewicz said in a prepared statement that the abuse took place on two consecutive occasions.

Morales-Cortes was arrested last Wednesday with the agreement of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and charged with aggravated sexual assault with a victim under the age of 13 and endangering the welfare of a child by participating in sexual activity, according to the statement.

According to the statement, Morales-Cortes was processed and then transferred to the custody of the Ocean County Jail in Toms River. Jackson Patrolman Matthew Kalbach and Detective Dominic Manion led the investigation, with help from the Prosecutor's Office's Special Victims Unit and the Ocean County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect was charged after an investigation in which multiple interviews were conducted, police said.

He remained in the county jail as of Tuesday night.
