Al Leiter Field in Al Kunzman Park, which is part of Central Regional School District, has been voted 2022 Field of the Year in the school category by Sports Field Management Association (SFMA).

The highest honor in the field is this well-respected distinction. The 2,700 men and women who oversee sports facilities around the world are members of the SFMA, a non-profit professional organization. They highlight their members who maintain and offer high-quality, secure playing surfaces each year.

After the major league pitcher from Berkeley Township, Al Leiter, the field was given the name "Leiter Baseball Park." The local government wished to recognize his family for their commitment to the town's youngsters at the time.

The facility was renovated thanks to a kind donation that included the construction of new dugouts, walkways, a two-story booth with an equipment area, bleachers, seats, and fencing.

Keith Fisher, the grounds supervisor, thanked Al Leiter personally, the administration, the board of educators, and superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides for their assistance.

He remarked, "The administration and the board deserve praise for the leadership role they have taken in New Jersey and the country to offer great and safe sports fields for the student athletes of Central Regional and the student athletes from visiting schools.

Leiter received his degree from Central in 1984 and later played pitcher for the Yankees and Mets. He played for the Toronto Blue Jays (1993) and Florida Marlins World Series-winning teams (1997).

Al Kunzman, a deceased baseball coach, was inducted into the Central Regional Sports Hall of Fame in 1987. He coached numerous other Hall of Famers, which demonstrates his talent. Along with other coaches, he was credited with founding the Ocean County and Shore Conference Tournaments.
