An Ocean County Man Confesses to Terrorist Threats and Arson

Shaun Giberson

Shaun Giberson, 40, of Point Pleasant Beach

Shaun Giberson, 40, of Point Pleasant Beach, pled guilty to Terroristic Threats in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-3a on January 7, 2022, before the Honorable Michael T. Collins, J.S.C., in relation to threats made in Point Pleasant Borough on March 17, 2021, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

Giberson also admitted to arson in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:17-1b(1) in connection with a separate incident on August 18, 2020 in Manchester Township. The State will seek a five-year sentence in New Jersey State Prison for each charge when he is sentenced on February 25, 2022. The sentences must be read in order.

An unknown caller left threatening voicemail messages at both Point Pleasant Borough High School and Nellie Bennett Elementary School on March 18, 2021, according to the Point Pleasant Borough Police Department.

Following an investigation by the Point Pleasant Borough Police Department, it was discovered that Giberson was the one who had left the threatening notes. Giberson was caught by officers from the Point Pleasant Borough Police Department on March 18, 2021, and has been held in the Ocean County Jail since then.

Officers from the Manchester Township Police Department were called to a nearby group home on August 18, 2020, after a backpack was set on fire there. Officers then discovered that Giberson, who was a resident of the group home at the time, had set fire to the backpack on purpose. He was apprehended, processed, and released with a summons.

Prosecutor Billhimer praises the State's Supervising Assistant Prosecutor Michael Abatemarco, as well as the Point Pleasant Borough Police Department and Manchester Township Police Department, for their hard work in connection with these separate investigations, which led to Giberson's arrest, guilty pleas, and impending state prison sentence.
