Barrier Island Curfew Start Time Moved to 10 pm

Curfew in Barrier Island

Curfew Has Changed

The modification in the Barrier Island curfew was verified by Toms River Mayor Maurice Hill at the Township Council meeting on Wednesday. On Wednesday, Mitchell Little, the police chief, signed the modification.

This summer, kids were allowed to stay out until 11 p.m. without parents or guardians, but concerns with teens getting drunk while being underage and then passing out, peeing in public, and damaging property led to the change.

During public discussion on Wednesday, Paul Jeffrey, vice president of the Ortley Beach Voters and Taxpayers Association, inquired about the curfew. Residents and the police department met, according to Jeffrey, and a list of complaints are being addressed. However, he hoped the curfew was one of the issues that was being dealt with right now.

The barrier island communities of Toms River will implement a 10PM–5AM curfew which began on August 11, 2022 for those who are 17 years old and younger. The curfew shall remain until September 30, 2022.

A curfew was imposed on June 13 from 11 PM to 5 AM. The decision to move the commencement time of the curfew to 10 PM was decided in response to demands from businesses and residents of the barrier island and to align the curfew hours with those of the other communities.
