Botulism Risk Prompts Coffee Recall in New Jersey

NEW JERSEY — Brooklyn Roasting Companyhas recalled its Pasteurized Cold Brew Concentrate after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned the product may present a potential botulism risk.

The recall applies to Pasteurized Cold Brew Concentrate with best-by dates from June 3 through Sept. 3, according to the FDA.

The affected products were distributed in New Jersey and New York between April 1 and June 20.

Federal officials said the recall was issued over concerns that storing the product at room temperature could create conditions that allow Clostridium botulinum bacteria to grow and produce a potentially dangerous toxin.

As of the FDA's recall notice, no illnesses had been reported in connection with the affected product.

The recalled cold brew concentrate was shipped across New Jersey and New York between April 1 and June 20. Brooklyn Roasting Company sells its products through its own cafés, specialty coffee retailers, independent markets, gourmet grocery stores, and online. However, the company has not identified which specific retailers received the recalled product.

Why Is Botulism Dangerous?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Clostridium botulinum can produce a toxin that attacks the nervous system. Botulism can lead to serious symptoms, including:

Difficulty breathing

Muscle weakness

Paralysis

In severe cases, the illness can be life-threatening.

What Is a Class II Recall?

The FDA has designated the coffee recall as a Class II recall. This classification means use of the product could cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, while the risk of serious health consequences is considered low.
