Severe Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain and Flash Flood Risk Return to New Jersey: Latest Forecast

Scattered thunderstorms capable of producing flash flooding are possible across New Jersey on Monday, with the threat increasing for more widespread severe weather on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service warned Sunday evening that showers, thunderstorms, and high humidity will return to the region beginning Monday and continue through at least Thursday. Forecasters said the potential for excessive rainfall and flash flooding is expected to increase early this week, with Tuesday posing the greatest risk.

Monday afternoon storms could bring powerful wind gusts and short bursts of heavy rain. All of New Jersey is currently classified under a marginal risk (Level 1 out of 5) for severe weather.

The National Weather Service said the state could see scattered, hit-or-miss thunderstorms Monday, with a few isolated storms potentially becoming severe.

Temperatures are expected to remain mild, with highs reaching the 80s on Monday.

More widespread showers and thunderstorms are forecast for Tuesday, with temperatures topping out in the mid-70s to lower 80s.

Southern New Jersey is facing a slight risk (Level 2 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms, while the rest of the state remains under a marginal risk.

Forecasters warned that a slow-moving or stalled weather front could lead to periods of heavy rainfall, especially across northern and central New Jersey, increasing the potential for flash flooding.

Additional scattered showers and thunderstorms may develop across New Jersey Wednesday afternoon, but the risk for severe storms and heavy rainfall is expected to be lower compared with Tuesday.

The chance for showers and thunderstorms should gradually decrease Thursday and Friday as the storm system moves farther east.

Forecasters noted that some uncertainty remains in the forecast, especially regarding the storm system’s exact path and where the heaviest rainfall will occur.
