The days of shorts and T-shirts are coming to an end, and many people will be digging into their wardrobes for apparel that is more appropriate for the fall and winter months.

People who have put off winter preparations will want to do so sooner rather than later this week, as many northeastern locations are expected to see temperatures that are the coldest they've seen since April or March. Potted summer flowers and food plants that have survived the extended frost-free time are nearing their conclusion.

Since last week, AccuWeather meteorologists have been following two prospective storm systems, both of which have the potential to bring snow to the region's traditionally frigid locations.

* WHAT...Temperatures as low as 33 will result in frost formation.
* WHERE...Portions of central, northern and southern New Jersey, southeast Pennsylvania and northern Delaware.
* WHEN...From 2 AM to 9 AM EDT Wednesday.
* IMPACTS...Frost could kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if left uncovered.

The first freeze warning or frost advisory of the 2021 fall season was issued for most of New Jersey Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, with forecasts predicting chilly air and temperatures in the mid 20s to low 30s.

It will be the first official freeze of the season in New Jersey if the temperature drops to 32 degrees or lower anywhere in the state.

According to statistics from the Rutgers NJ Weather Network and the National Weather Service, no weather reporting stations in the Garden State — including those in the chilly hills and valleys of Sussex County — exceeded the freezing mark between September and October.
