According to Toms River police, a woman has been charged after she struck a car that was in the intersection while running a red light on Route 37.
Just before 10 a.m. on November 6,
Daniella Ippolitto, 36, was traveling west on Route 37 when her car collided with another that was traveling north on Vaughn Avenue, according to Jillian Messina, a media relations specialist for the
Toms River Police Department. According to investigators, the other car spun out of control and struck the traffic signal's foundation.
According to authorities, Ippolitto was driving on Route 37 with a red traffic signal when he failed to stop; the other car, however, had a green signal. Additional charges are forthcoming, according to Messina, and she has been charged with failing to observe a traffic signal.
Ippolitto struck a stopped car at a high speed and attempted to change lanes at the last second, according to the police, injuring the other motorist. Following the May collision that disabled the traffic light at the Route 37/Hooper Avenue crossroads, Ippolitto was sent to the hospital.
Ippolitto and her passenger in the Nov. 6 incident claimed minor injuries, but they refused to be transported to the hospital for further care, according to Messina. She said there were no injuries to the other driver.
The state Department of Transportation was summoned to check the traffic pole and base after both vehicles were hauled from the scene.
The Traffic Safety Unit's Cpl. Robert Westfall is conducting the investigation.
