Toms River Man Arrested

After an accident in Mantoloking on Sunday morning, a man wearing body armor was apprehended, and responding police officers allegedly discovered multiple guns and ammo in his car, according to authorities.

According to a statement from the department, Mantoloking Patrolman Logan LaRue was dispatched to a single-vehicle crash on Route 35 near the 1200 block of the borough at 3:02 a.m. and arrested Jeremy W. Barringer, 46, of Toms River.

He was apprehended after seeing the contents of his car, which allegedly included a loaded AR-15 rifle, three high capacity magazines with hollow point bullets, and a loaded 9mm handgun with additional magazines loaded with hollow point bullets.

Barringer was charged with various weapons-related offenses, including unlawful possession of a rifle and weapon possession after being convicted of a sex crime, according to the department.

He was convicted of sexual assault in Missouri in 1999, according to New Jersey State Police records, after he "approached young women on the street, entered their homes, and sexually attacked them."

He was arrested and booked into the Ocean County Jail, with more charges expected to be filed Monday afternoon, according to police.
