Drought Warnings Are Across All NJ Counties: What You Should Know
The majority of New Jersey is still experiencing moderate drought conditions despite recent rainfall, while some areas of the state are currently experiencing severe drought.
The state's drinking water supplies have significantly improved over the last two months, with most reservoirs only marginally below their typical levels for late April and some slightly above them. This is good news.
However, more rain would be beneficial for New Jersey.
Prior to the extensive rain that fell on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, the National Drought Mitigation Center's most recent data indicates that as of April 28, the majority of Cape May County, a sizable portion of Atlantic and Gloucester counties, and small areas of Burlington, Cumberland, Ocean, and Salem counties were experiencing severe drought conditions.
There is still a moderate drought throughout the remainder of the state. As a result, state officials issued a drought alert in early December 2025 that still applies to all 21 counties.
The DEP is urging residents to use less water wherever possible because the growing season is now started and warmer weather is on the horizon, which will result in more households utilizing water for lawns, plants, and swimming pools.
The DEP stated, "New Jersey citizens are strongly advised to exercise water conservation and use water wisely."
Saving water doesn’t require huge lifestyle changes—small, consistent habits make a real difference. Here are practical, effective water conservation tips you can start using right away:
🚿 In the Bathroom
Take shorter showers (aim for 5–7 minutes).
Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving.
Fix leaks—one dripping faucet can waste hundreds of gallons a year.
Install low-flow showerheads and toilets.
🍽️ In the Kitchen
Only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Scrape plates instead of rinsing them before loading.
Keep a pitcher of cold water in the fridge instead of running the tap.
🌿 Outdoors
Water your lawn early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation.
Use drought-resistant plants (xeriscaping).
Sweep driveways instead of hosing them down.
Collect rainwater for plants if allowed in your area.
👕 Laundry
Wash full loads whenever possible.
Upgrade to a high-efficiency washing machine if you can.
🏡 Around the House
Check for hidden leaks in toilets (a few drops of food coloring in the tank can reveal leaks).
Insulate pipes so you don’t have to run water as long to get it hot.
Reuse water when possible (e.g., leftover water from rinsing vegetables for plants).
