NJ Counties on Alert: Heavy Rains Trigger Flood Watch

Flood warnings for the Passaic River, Millstone River, and North Branch Rancocas Creek at Pemberton have been issued by the National Weather Service, impacting the counties of Burlington, Morris, Essex, Somerset, and Passaic.

The following counties are under a flood watch in effect 1 p.m. through Wednesday night: Morris, Somerset, Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Burlington, Ocean, Passaic, Bergen, Union, Essex an Hudson.

A number of rainstorms that are expected to batter the state on Wednesday night and throughout the rest of the week could cause flooding in a dozen New Jersey counties.

According to the National Weather Service, the Garden State has already had up to a quarter of an inch of rain as of Wednesday morning, and up to four inches of precipitation are expected through Saturday.

According to the EPA, rain is expected to continue throughout Thursday after arriving today in North Jersey and Wednesday afternoon for the remainder of the state. There will likely be more rain later on Saturday and into Sunday. Because of the saturated ground, there will likely be further flooding worries throughout the week.

The National Weather Service stated that "more precipitation brought to the region may exacerbate the potential for flooding due to multiple previous rain events happening before the weekend time frame." "With several rivers already risen, the ground will be wet before the weekend. This weekend's forecast of more rain could force some of our region's rivers to reach flood stage or cause rivers that have already reached flood stage to rise again.

According to its daily forecast, AccuWeather is already anticipating travel delays and disruptions to outdoor activities on Thursday due to possible floods.
