Gov. Phil Murphy's effort to become the first Democrat to win re-election to a second term in 44 years was proving to be a nail-biter late Tuesday night, with his Republican opponent leading with more than half of the ballots counted.
The unexpected race was too close to call, and Murphy's re-election chances depended on a late surge of votes from traditionally Democratic districts of the state.
Murphy had a significant advantage among registered voters over Jack Ciattarelli, a former state assemblyman and businessman from central New Jersey, as recently as last week, according to public surveys. Political experts warned, however, that Murphy's margin has decreased in recent months, and that New Jersey voters have a habit of changing their minds.
Professor John Farmer Jr., director of Rutgers University's Eagleton Institute of Politics and previous chairman of the state's redistricting panel, told NBC10, "We're a liberal state, but reserve the right to change our opinion."
