According to a release from Trader Joe's, their sale of basil in several states, including New Jersey, has been connected to a salmonella epidemic that has sickened twelve people in seven states.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that one person in New Jersey was among those who became ill.

The product, Infinite Herbs organic basil, was offered at Trader Joe's locations in 29 states and the District of Columbia from February 1 to April 6 in 2.5-ounce clamshell packaging.

After contracting salmonella, a bacteria that can result in life-threatening infections or even death, one person was admitted to the hospital.

There were additional states where the basil was sold: the District of Columbia; Alabama; Connecticut; Delaware; Florida; Georgia; Iowa; Illinois; Indiana; Kansas; Kentucky; Massachusetts; Maryland; Maine; Michigan; Minnesota; Missouri; North Carolina; Nebraska; New Hampshire; New York; Ohio; Pennsylvania; Rhode Island; South Carolina; Tennessee; Virginia; Vermont; and Wisconsin.

Four cases of salmonella illnesses were recorded from Minnesota, three from Florida, and one each from Georgia, Missouri, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin.
