Immigrants in New Jersey are Eligible for $500 in Pandemic Relief Under the Murphy Plan

$500 In Relief

In Gov. Phil Murphy's newest state budget proposal, immigrants who pay taxes in New Jersey would be eligible for $500 in pandemic relief money.

According to NJ.com, which cited the State Treasury Department, more than 100,000 people would be eligible for the one-time payment funded by the American Rescue Plan, a federal pandemic relief program. Murphy has set aside $53 million for the payouts in total.

The plan follows a previous scheme that gave economic assistance to undocumented immigrants, those who had recently been released from prison, and homeless people who were not eligible for unemployment or other stimulus benefits.

Individuals must have a taxpayer ID and income no more than twice the federal poverty rate to qualify for the ITIN Holders Direct Assistance Program, according to NJ.com. The state Joint Budget Oversight Committee will have to approve the appropriation.
