Investigation Launched into Man's Death at Toms River Gas Station

The NJ Office of the Attorney General has declared that it is looking into the death of a guy who was detained on Friday at the Shell gas station on Route 37 due to unfulfilled warrants.

The man's identity remained undisclosed.

At approximately 1:00 p.m., there was an incident at the Shell station located in Island Heights near the intersection of Route 37 and West End Avenue.

The individual had current warrants, according to the preliminary inquiry, and the attorney general's office said that Toms River and Island Heights police officers, together with officers from the Ocean County Sheriff's Office, were attempting to arrest him.

According to the attorney general's office, the man said he was experiencing a medical crisis and would not get out of his parked car. According to the attorney general's office, officers were able to apprehend him and administer medical care on the spot.

After being transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River, the man was declared deceased at approximately 2:25 p.m., according to the attorney general's office.

Authorities stated that no new information was being given and that the investigation is still ongoing.

"The Attorney General's Office is required by a 2019 legislation, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), to investigate any death that takes place during a person's interaction with a law enforcement official working in that officer's official capacity or while the decedent is in custody. The attorney general's office stated that all such investigations must be submitted to a grand jury in order to ascertain whether the evidence warrants the return of an indictment against the officer or officers in question.
