Little League World Series Player in a Coma After Falling off Bunk Bed

Easton Oliverson

Easton Oliverson, 12 from Utah

After falling off the top bunk of a bed early on Monday morning, a 12-year-old kid from Utah who was set to play in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA required emergency surgery for a severe head injury.

Easton Oliverson, a pitcher and outfielder for the Snow Canyon team from Santa Clara, Utah, fell in a dorm in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and sustained a head injury. He was subsequently flown to a pediatric hospital in the state, where he is now receiving intensive care.

Oliverson's father, Jace, provided a Facebook update on his son's condition and said that the doctors had informed him that Oliverson had punctured an artery, which had caused bleeding on the brain, and required the removal of a piece of the skull.

"He went through pretty traumatic surgery to get to where he's at, but the doctors are all really positive," Spencer Beck, Easton Oliverson's uncle, told the Salt Lake Tribune. "All of the steps moving forward have been good so far."

Oliverson is in the ICU as doctors wait for the swelling in his brain to go down, Beck told the newspaper. According to Beck, his nephew is still utilizing a breathing tube.

Beck told the newspaper that one of his teammates was awakened by his nephew's fall and notified others.

Beck told the newspaper, "Had that other player not been awakened by him falling, he may not have made it."

Jace was told by the surgeon that he would have died if he hadn't gone into surgery right away, according to Beck, who spoke to the AP.

The Oliverson family was "pleased to learn that his medical team is encouraged by his recovery," according to a statement from Little League World Series officials that was published on Tuesday.

The Mountain Region's Snow Canyon team is scheduled to play its opening game in the Little League World Series on Friday at 3 p.m. ET. The team's assistant coach is Jace Oliverson.

The first Utah club to advance to the Little League World Series was Santa Clara.

A Facebook page was set up to provide updates on his son's health.

According to the page, a friend of Easton's was able to speak with him on the phone on Tuesday and, when he asked Easton to give a thumbs up, he gave him two thumbs up.

The page organizers stated, "We are so grateful for these small miracles."

Beck told the media that Oliverson, who's earned the nickname "Tank," is currently in a medically induced coma -- though he and the rest of the family are optimistic the boy will make a recovery.

"He's a really good kid, very loving," Beck said. "Full of smiles. Just a fun, fun kid -- so we're all praying for him."

The family has set up a Venmo account for Easton Oliverson -- @MiraclesForTank -- to help with medical expenses.
