According to Toms River Police, a New York man was issued a ticket after colliding with a Toms River police car on Sunday night as it was responding to an emergency.
About 9 p.m. on Sunday, Brian Ayres, 55, of Pearl River, New York, struck the police car while driving in the left lane of Route 37 going west, according to Jillian Messina, a media relations specialist with the Toms River Police Department. Having his emergency lights and siren activated, the police officer was responding to a complaint about a boat that had run aground on a barrier island, tossing people off and causing injuries, when he was struck, according to Messina.Before striking the Toms River Police patrol car on the driver's side, Ayres claimed to the authorities that he had not noticed the emergency lights on the vehicle.
All other traffic had stopped and yielded to the emergency vehicle, according to witnesses at the site, she claimed.Messina claimed that despite having minor injuries from the collision, Ayres and the officer declined medical attention. Both cars were severely damaged and had to be taken away.
According to her, Ayres received a ticket for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. Sgt. Sean Smith of the Toms River Police is looking into the collision. The Ocean County Sheriff's Department and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office provided assistance.
