Memorial Day Weekend Washout Continues

Rainy and Cold Memorial Day Weekend

The rainy, cold Memorial Day weekend continues with dreary conditions at the Jersey Shore.

The first weekend after the mask mandate had been lifted and social distancing requirements were all but gone, millions in the state are vaccinated and ready to enjoy the outdoors like never before.

TOMS RIVER WEATHER A steady, soaking rain pounded the region for much of Saturday, with winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour along the coast and high temperatures struggling to reach the mid-50s, some 15 to 20 degrees below normal for this time of year.

Jersey Central Power & Light reported fewer than 100 outages along Shore customers late Saturday.

Today is not much better with periods of steady rain that could reach more than an inch and highs near 59. Northeast winds could gust as high as 30 mph.

Rain is expected to continue into Sunday evening and there is a coastal flood warning of one to two feet of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways and dangerous rip currents in Monmouth and Ocean counties in New Jersey through Sunday evening, according to the National Weather Service

"At this level, flooding begins on the most vulnerable roads in coastal and bayside communities, and along inland tidal waterways," the warning stated. "Some partial or full road closures are possible. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water."
