Elizabeth Montoya Lavoie was organizing this fundraiser on behalf of Mayra Montoya.

According to the GoFundMe:

We are reaching out to you with heavy hearts and a plea for help. Alena Robles, our beloved 8-year-old girl, full of life and joy, is currently fighting for her life in a coma due to complications from the flu.

Our little girl, from Forked River, NJ, usually bursting with energy and laughter, began feeling sick on March 10th, woke up on March 11th with a headache and suddenly began having seizures one after another that morning, shocking us all. The ambulance was called and Alena was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. She is currently in the ICU.

The doctors say that her body’s reaction to the flu has caused severe encephalitis : swelling in the brain, which caused her to seize. The medical team is working tirelessly to combat the swelling in her brain, desperately trying to give her a chance to wake up.

This sudden and devastating turn of events has left our family reeling emotionally and financially. As we navigate this unimaginable ordeal, we are faced with mounting medical bills, expenses for specialized treatments, and the uncertainty of what lies ahead. Our family has recently endured another tragedy as the Alena’s Tia and cousins narrowly survived the Maui fires, just 6 months ago.

Your donations will provide crucial financial assistance to cover medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, and other unforeseen expenses that arise during this challenging journey. Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a meaningful impact on my family's ability to focus on what truly matters – the health and recovery of our child.

Even if you are unable to donate, please consider sharing our story and keeping us in your prayers. Please pray for Alena. Everything counts. Thank you for opening your hearts during this difficult time.

With heartfelt gratitude,
The Robles Family
