Ocean County Man Faces Manslaughter Charges

Anthony Collins, 40, of Seaside Heights

According to the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, in connection with the death of Seaside Heights resident Robert May, 70, on October 1, 2023, in the Borough of Seaside Heights, Anthony Collins, 40, of Seaside Heights, had been charged with manslaughter and endangering an injured victim on October 4, 2023.

Officers from the Seaside Heights Police Department responded to the area of Central Avenue and Sumner Avenue on September 18, 2023, at around 4:00 p.m. for a report of a fall victim.

Responding officers discovered a male victim lying on the ground next to his bicycle who was later identified as Robert May. Mr. May was seen to be hemorrhaging from a head wound. After receiving initial care on the site, Mr. May declined further medical attention and departed the location to go back to his house.

The Seaside Heights Police Department conducted an investigation after learning that Mr. May had been assaulted, which is what had caused him to lose control of his bicycle and hit his head on the sidewalk.

At before 5:00 p.m. on September 18, 2023, the Tri-Boro First Aid Squad took Mr. May from his residence to the Community Medical Center in Toms River because the Seaside Heights Police Department had received information that he had been acting strangely after his fall.

Mr. May was eventually transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick as his condition continued to deteriorate. On October 1st, 2023, Mr. May passed away from his wounds. According to a post-mortem examination performed on that day by the Ocean County Medical Examiner's Office, Mr. May's death was caused by a blunt force injury sustained during the assault that took place in Seaside Heights on September 18, 2023, and he was killed.

The Major Crime Unit of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and the Seaside Heights Police Department's ongoing investigation established that Collins was in fact the person who assaulted Mr. May on September 18th, ultimately leading to his death.

Collins was given a warrant for his arrest on October 4, 2023, and his information was added to the National Crime Information Center database. Collins turned himself in at the Seaside Heights Police Department's main office on October 15, 2023. He was taken to the Ocean County Jail, where he is now being held while a detention hearing is scheduled.

Prosecutor Billhimer appreciates the cooperation shown in this investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Major Crime Unit, Seaside Heights Police Department Detective Bureau, Seaside Heights Police Department, Ocean County Medical Examiner's Office, and United States Marshals Service.
