Ocean County Man Sentenced to 20 Years in State Prison for Carjacking

John Bailey of Bayville

John Bailey, 36, of Bayville

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office announced that the Bayville man who assaulted a lady who escaped as he drove away in a 2018 Lakewood carjacking has been given a sentence to New Jersey State Prison.

According to Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, John Bailey, 36, was given a 20-year jail term subject to the No Early Release Act, which requires him to complete at least 85% of his time before being eligible for parole. Bailey pleaded guilty on June 1, 2022.

According to Billhimer, Bailey was found in 2021 when DNA testing matched his DNA to blood found in the abandoned car.

A 20-year-old Lakewood lady was waiting in her car on December 5, 2018, near her home on Hearth Court, when a man approached her and requested instructions and a ride, according to Billhimer. According to Billhimer, she provided him directions but denied to give him a ride.

Shortly after, the man returned, slammed the car's window, and cracked the glass, according to Billhimer. He entered the vehicle, sat on the victim, and began to choke her, according to Billhimer.

Billhimer claimed the man threatened to kill the woman if she did not remain silent and then drove off with her confined inside.

While the car was moving, the woman managed to open the passenger-side door and leaped out, according to Billhimer. To phone Lakewood police, she dashed to a nearby residence.

According to Billhimer, she was rushed to Monmouth Medical Center in Lakewood for treatment of bite marks on her leg, a laceration on her head, and neck wounds.

According to Billhimer, blood was spotted on the rear driver's side door and quarter panel when the car was discovered in Jackson later that day.

The New Jersey State Police Office of Forensic Sciences was able to match DNA from the vehicle's blood stain to Bailey, which led to the identification of Bailey as the missing man, according to Billhimer.

On October 13, 2020, a court-ordered buccal swab of Bailey was collected, and DNA profiles from the blood stain and bite marks on the victim's leg were compared, according to Billhimer. After the match was established on January 4, 2021, Bailey was arrested the following day and charged with carjacking.

On January 26, 2021, Bailey was detained in Perth Amboy and sent to the Ocean County Jail, where he has remained ever since, according to Billhimer.
