Old Time Tavern in Toms River

Old Time Tavern

Do You Remember This Restaurant?

Everyone who grew up in Toms River remembers this restaurant, which was located in the old Dover Mall near the crossroads of Routes 9 and 37. (there was a movie theater there, too). Many people traveled there to celebrate significant milestones such as graduations, birthdays, and bridal showers.

A piece of township history was housed in the tavern: The Ocean House, an 18th-century hotel that was transferred from downtown Toms River in the 1950s to avoid demolition, provided a piece of the structure (A 7-Eleven now stands at the site, at Main and Water streets). The portion that was salvaged became the dining room and southeast section of the pub after extensive repair.

Before the widening of Route 9 and the development of a new plaza that presently contains Buffalo Wild Wings, Mahana Fresh, and Panera Bread, among other companies, the Old Time Tavern was demolished in 2008.
