Scary Rotten Farms in Brick will Become Self-Storage Facility

Berry Fresh Farms Property

After the Brick Planning Board approved the project on Wednesday, a farmers market and garden center that is a popular Halloween destination will be transformed into a three-story self-storage facility.

The board unanimously approved CE Development Management of Columbia, South Carolina's plan to rebuild Berry Fresh Farms — or "Scary Rotten Farms" during the autumn — into an Extra Space Storage facility.

Scary Rotten Farms' terrifying Halloween tradition has been going on for over a decade, and was known for its twisted carnival of spooky clowns and chilling reinterpretations of classic fairytales.

According to Brick Boulevard neighbor Daniel Tomé, 38, both the Halloween attraction and the more everyday operation of the garden center and store were a public benefit to the inhabitants of Brick. Tomé expressed his disappointment with the Planning Board's decision after the meeting on Wednesday.

"I believe that (the farmers market) provides a better overall service to the community," he said. "It is a greater service to the family as a result of their Halloween activities. Another storage unit facility is the last thing we need in suburbia, in my opinion."

CE Development Management's planner Christine Nazzaro-Cofone disagreed, claiming that the self storage facility will improve the neighborhood by reducing traffic on Brick Boulevard compared to the existing farm market.

She added that the facility would be the first in the area to provide climate-controlled storage alternatives.

"It'll be quieter than it is now (on the property)," she says.
