The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office reported on Friday that a man from Seaside Heights has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a stabbing that took place early on Thursday in Seaside Park.

According to prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, Porfirio B. Serrano-Cruz, 38, of Seaside Heights, was charged with burglary, attempted murder, unlawful weapon possession, unlawful weapon use, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of clonazepam without a prescription.

Around 5:15 a.m. on Thursday, a man called 911 to report that someone had broken into his O Street home and was attempting to kill him, according to Billhimer. Seaside Park police responded to the call.

The 39-year-old male was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune with multiple stab wounds to his arms, chest, belly, and crotch. According to Billhimer, he is classified in critical but stable condition.

Serrano-Cruz was identified as the assailant by the detectives, but Billhimer provided no details on how they arrived at that conclusion or what their possible motives might have been.

Police in Seaside Heights found Serrano-Cruz and took him into custody. According to Billhimer, he is being held at the Ocean County Jail until a detention hearing.
