New Jersey State Parks, Forests & Historic Sites

It takes a full team of devoted professionals trained in aquatics management and lifesaving to operate nine swim sites in state parks and forests throughout New Jersey. The New Jersey State Park Service's Aquatics Program is a great place to start if you're a seasoned lifeguard or a high school student searching for your first summer employment.

In 2022, the State Park Service is expanding lifeguard positions with competitive pay! Aside from guarding on stand, the aquatics program offers a variety of leadership opportunities.

Lifeguards – $17.50/hour ($18.50/hour for Island Beach) – Vacancies Statewide.
Lifeguard positions are anticipated at nine swimming areas across the state. While candidates must pass running and swim tests prior to employment, prior experience is not necessary. Paid training is provided and each lifeguard will receive a U.S. Lifesaving Association certification.

Junior Lifeguards – $16/hour – Vacancies Statewide
Junior lifeguards are hired at 15 years old and will work on skills training, giving new recruits a head start on their training. Junior lifeguards cannot perform lifeguard duties for the public until age 16.

Lifeguard Trainer – $27/hour – 2 Vacancies (Central Region & Southern Region)
Responsible for training and certifying lifeguards in American Safety and Health Institute Advanced First Aid, BLS, oxygen administration, the use of an automatic external defibrillator, and bloodborne pathogens.

Water Safety Supervisor – $27/hour – 1 Vacancy (Southern Region)
Provides support and expertise for the efficient operation of all lakefront beaches within the region and ensure that lifeguard training procedures and standards are consistent.

Aquatics Program Supervisor – $28/hour – 1 Vacancy (Statewide Position)
Responsible for oversight of the United States Lifesaving Association Certification all State Park Service ocean and freshwater swimming areas. This position also oversees the NJ State Park Service American Safety and Health Institute training center and trainers.
