The Hazing Investigation at Wall Township High School has Resulted in Coaching Suspensions

Wall Township High School

Three Wall Township High School football coaches were suspended on Thursday as part of an inquiry into an alleged locker room hazing incident that has already resulted in the cancellation of a playoff game and raised concerns about safety and fairness.

"Three coaches were suspended," Dawn Hiltner, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey Education Association, which represents the employees, said. She had no way of knowing who the coaches were or if they were on paid or unpaid leave.

Parents and kids spoke to reporters outside the campus earlier in the day, at New Bedford Road and 18th Avenue, about the escalating situation, which stemmed from reports that numerous players were part in a locker room hazing event that may have been recorded.

Police had begun an investigation into what was later discovered to be alleged abuse involving several members of the football team, according to school district officials on Tuesday. A second-round playoff game scheduled for Friday was canceled the next day, and workouts were halted.

"The football game scheduled for this Friday, November 12, is cancelled due to this pending investigation, and after consultation with board counsel, administration, and the Office of the Monmouth County Interim Executive County Superintendent," Superintendent Tracy Handerhan wrote to district families on Wednesday.

According to people with knowledge of the incident, the Wall police and the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office are both involved in the investigation. Both sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not permitted to speak to the media.

However, neither the district nor law enforcement officials have provided any information on what happened.

The status of Wall's annual Thanksgiving Day game against rival Manasquan has not been amended by district officials.

"At this time, no decision has been made about the Thanksgiving Day Game," Handerhan wrote in an email on Thursday.
