Mayor Paul Kanitra of Point Pleasant Beach left for Poland last night and will travel to the country's eastern border, where he will cooperate with humanitarian organizations to help refugees leaving Ukraine as a result of Russia's escalating assault.
Kanitra, 42, has already booked a passenger vehicle to travel to Medyka, a settlement on the Poland-Ukraine border, and provide free transportation to migrants traveling to train stations, bus stations, and airports. He also intends to volunteer with local aid organizations.
According to the Mayor's facebook page, Kanitra said he'd already filled four suitcases with diapers, toiletries, first-aid supplies, and winter apparel provided by Point Pleasant Beach companies.
He was motivated to go because of the summer employees on the Jersey Shore. Thousands of students, mostly from Eastern and Central Europe, visit the United States each summer on J-1 visas as part of the State Department's Summer Work Travel program.
"Every summer, we have a group of Ukrainian and Polish young adults that come out and help out on the boardwalk," Kanitra added. "Because they play such an important part in keeping the town run, I believe we have a special bond with them here."
