Three People Injured in Five-Vehicle Chain Reaction Crash Including Woman from Toms River

Toms River Woman Airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune

Manchester police reported Monday that three people have been injured following a five-vehicle chain-reaction rear-end collision on Manchester Boulevard on Sunday, including two who needed to be taken to a trauma hospital.

Following the collision, which happened just before 11 a.m. on Sunday, David Williams, 60, of Jackson, and Mary Ferguson, 53, of Toms River were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, according to Manchester Lt. James Komsa. Both suffered head injuries, he claimed.

According to him, Dominque Swain, 26, of Toms River, was also taken to Community Medical Center for treatment of neck and back injuries.

Williams, who was operating a gray 2010 Honda Accord, failed to notice that traffic was snarled at a red light at Lacey Road as he was traveling west on Manchester Boulevard, according to Komsa.

According to Komsa, Williams rear-ended Ferguson's blue 2018 Nissan Kick, which caused it to over the center line and go into the opposing lane of traffic.

Williams' Honda continued to move ahead and struck Swain's silver 2008 Saturn Aurora from the rear. The Toyota then struck the rear of a gray 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe being driven by Beverly Muhammad, 73, of Whiting, while the Saturn struck the rear of a silver 2012 Toyota Tundra being driven by Tina Helbig, 67, of Manchester.

The Whiting Volunteer Fire Company had to free Ferguson from the Nissan, according to him, and the Nissan, Honda, and Saturn all had air bags deploy as a result of the collision's power.

According to Komsa, Beverly Muhammad and her front-seat passenger Abdul Muhammad, 83, also of Whiting, and Tina Helbig and her front-seat passenger Carolyn Helbig, 87, both of Manchester, all declined medical assistance.

Both the 2-year-old and the 13-year-old Brick boys in Ferguson's Nissan were properly restrained, and their parents declined to take them to the hospital, Komsa claimed.

While victims were being treated and the accident was being investigated, Manchester Boulevard was shut down for a number of hours.

Assisting at the scene were Robert Wood Johnson paramedics, EMTs with the Manchester Emergency Medical Services, Hackensack Meridian Medevac Helicopter Services, Ocean County Sheriff's Department Crime Scene Investigation Unit, and the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department.

Manchester Sgt. Ian Bole is investigating.
