According to Toms River Township Government, Mayor Maurice B. "Mo" Hill has stated that an 11 p.m. curfew will be in effect in Toms River's coastal communities until September 30.
Following a number of complaints from island residents about groups of unruly teens drinking, fighting, and urinating in public on the beach and nearby streets over Memorial Day weekend,
Toms River Police Chief Mitch Little enforced the curfew on Monday.
Little also serves as the township's emergency management coordinator, and he utilized his position to impose the curfew. It was put in place as a result of Gov. Phil Murphy's Executive Order 103, which proclaimed a state of emergency after the coronavirus pandemic broke out.
Anyone under the age of 17 is prohibited from being outside between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. According to a recent announcement from the mayor's office, there are exceptions for medical crises, travel to and from work, any religious or educational function, and transport to and from a private gathering.
According to the mayor's office, anyone who breaks the curfew could be prosecuted with a disorderly person's crime.
