Toms River Police Warning Residents to Lock Your Car Doors

Please Lock Your Vehicles

According to the Toms River Police Department and the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, auto theft in Ocean County is on the rise. they would like to remind the public that unlocked automobiles with the key FOB inside account for the vast majority of vehicle thefts.

They have investigated 28 motor vehicle thefts and over 120 motor vehicle burglaries so far this year. Toms River Police cannot emphasize this enough: crooks know how to spot easy targets, so please lock your vehicles and keep your key FOB on you at all times. Don't become a victim of a crime that may have been avoided.

TIPS TO AVOID THEFT

Always secure your vehicle and remove personal belongings from plain view when leaving vehicles unattended.

Theft from vehicles is an ongoing problem throughout the county.

  • Suspects frequently hunt for unlocked cars, especially in bad weather when there are less people outside to spot strange activity.
  • Take the keys out of the ignition and turn off your automobile - never leave it running or unattended.
  • Take your valuables with you and don't leave anything of value in the car or in plain sight. A thief can be attracted to even a cupholder.
  • Personal documents, checkbooks, and driver's licenses should all be kept in your hands at all times.
  • Gift cards should not be left in the car.
  • Hide your belongings - if you can't bring everything with you, put it in the trunk or under a seat where it won't be seen.
  • Keep your keys on you at all times, especially if you have someone at home who you don't want to have access to the car while you're away.
  • Keep your vehicle in a secure spot, such as a driveway or garage. If at all possible, avoid parking on the street and instead park in well-lit locations or beneath motion-activated lights.
  • Don't forget to set your alarm if you have one.
