NEW JERSEY — The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for portions of Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania until 9:00 p.m. EDT, as a powerful weather system moves across the Northeast.

The watch means that weather conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes, along with severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail, frequent lightning, and heavy rainfall that could lead to localized flooding.

Residents across the affected areas, including parts of New Jersey, are urged to remain weather aware throughout the evening. While a tornado has not necessarily been spotted, conditions could change rapidly, making it important to monitor forecasts and have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts.

Tornado Watch vs. Tornado Warning

A Tornado Watch means tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. Residents should review their emergency plans and stay alert for changing weather conditions.

A Tornado Warning, on the other hand, means a tornado has been detected by radar or reported by trained spotters. If a warning is issued for your area, seek shelter immediately in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows.
Safety Tips

  • Keep your cellphone charged and emergency alerts turned on.
  • Monitor local forecasts and National Weather Service updates.
  • Be prepared to move to a safe shelter if a warning is issued.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel during severe thunderstorms.
Forecasters will continue to monitor the storm system throughout the evening, and additional watches or warnings may be issued if conditions worsen. Residents in the affected states should stay informed and be prepared to act quickly if severe weather develops.

The tornado watch remains in effect until 9:00 p.m. EDT.
