After Listeria Contamination was Discovered, Salads Marketed Under the Fresh Express and Other Private Labels in New Jersey were Recalled

Salad products marketed under the Fresh Express private brands have been recalled in 19 states, including New Jersey, due to probable listeria monocytogenes contamination. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious or deadly diseases in vulnerable people.

Fresh Express, based in Streamwood, Illinois, said its products were sold in Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin, as well as Ontario and Manitoba in Canada.

They were sold under Fresh Express and the following labels:

  • Healthy adults who consume listeria-contaminated food usually have no or only short-term symptoms, such as a high temperature, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, excruciating pain, and diarrhea; it can also result in miscarriage or stillbirth in pregnant women.

In young children, fragile or elderly people, and others with weaker immune systems, serious and sometimes fatal infections can arise.

Following a positive result for listeria monocytogenes in a random sample test of a single package of Fresh Express 9-ounce Sweet Hearts salad mix prepared in the company's Streamwood, Illinois, factory, the company announced the voluntary recall.

The salad products have been linked to ten illnesses, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Anyone who has one of the recalled items should throw it away. Consumers can contact the Fresh Express Consumer Response Center at 800-242-5472 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern Time for a refund or more information. Purchases can also be returned for a refund.
