Seaside Heights to Permit Pedalcycle Operations in Town
Officials in Seaside Heights gave in to a request from a potential business owner and allowed pedalcycles to operate in the community.
A pedalcycle is a pedal-powered buggy that travels between 5-8 m.p.h. and stops at a number of bars throughout the town. It is becoming more and more popular in some locations across the nation. Alcohol is not permitted on the bike itself, however passengers can typically bring food and nonalcoholic beverages with them.
Passengers sit across from one another on bicycle seats that line both sides of the vehicle while they pedal the vehicle through the town. The cycle is guided and is started and stopped by a professional operator. The Seaside Heights pedalcycles will have enough for 15 people.
In Seaside Heights, pedacyle rides were suggested in 2018, however they were never implemented. Although the new company's name has not been disclosed, it is anticipated to launch this summer. The council decided to approve the operation of pedacycles as a pilot project through December 31, 2022 in order to determine whether such a business would work in Seaside Heights.
Mayor Anthony Vaz remarked, "We can take it back if things don't go as expected."
While some towns equip pedalcycles with mobile bars, the Seaside Heights excursion will instead include a "pub crawl" at neighborhood pubs and eateries. Along the Jersey Shore, businesses selling pedal bicycles have also proliferated in Asbury Park and Long Beach Island. One such company, "The Pedalcycle," which charges $40 per person or $500 for a private rental, is frequently used for birthday celebrations, bachelor parties, corporate team-building exercises, and other special occasions.
