An 80-year-old man was rescued from a 16-foot boat that ran aground in Barnegat Inlet on Monday by the Coast Guard.
The son of the overdue boater reported to watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay that his father had not returned home by sunset. The son also notified watchstanders that his father left without any communication gear onboard, only having a life jacket and a whistle.
The report was responded to by Coast Guard members from Station Barnegat Light and Air Station Atlantic City, as well as a New Jersey State police aviation unit. The victim was spotted by New Jersey State Police, and a Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew carried him to safety, taking him to Island Beach State Park, where EMS was waiting.
Cmdr. Brett Workman, Sector Delaware Bay Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator, said, "This instance definitely underscored the need of letting someone know your whereabouts before you get underway." "His family was aware of where he was leaving from, where he intended to go, and when he anticipated to return. We knew where to seek because his family knew his float plan, and we were eventually able to locate and rescue him.
