According to the New Jersey State Police, a 47-year-old Toms River man died Thursday morning after being ejected from his Mercedes-Benz in an automobile accident on the Garden State Parkway.

Frederick Esser was driving the Mercedes around 10:10 a.m. when it was involved in a "sideswipe collision" with a Volkswagen Passat on the parkway's southbound lanes near mile marker 61.8, according to the statement.

The Mercedes-Benz overturned, collided with the left guardrail, and then went off the road to the right, according to the statement. According to the State Police, Esser was thrown from the car and suffered fatal injuries.

The Volkswagen's occupants were unharmed when their vehicle went off the road and came to a rest off the parkway's right shoulder, according to the statement.

The parkway's right two southbound lanes were closed for three hours, causing severe traffic congestion in the area.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
