Boogie Boarder Saves Elderly Swimmer at Jersey Shore

Swimmer Rescued By Boogie Boarder Off Seaside Park

A Good Samaritan and lifeguards saved a man from the ocean off Seaside Park on Tuesday afternoon, according to Seaside Park Police. He was a resident of Bergen County.

According to Seaside Park PoliceSgt. Andrew Casole, the 81-year-old man was swimming at the O Street beach around 2:55 p.m. when individuals on land noticed he was in trouble.

According to Casole, a Good Samaritan swimming out to the man with a boogie board put him onto the boogie board so he wouldn't drown when the man was drifting about 200 yards offshore and heading toward Stockton Avenue.

The boogie boarder, Michael Lantz of Bayville, claimed that firefighters from Seaside Park spotted the man struggling while they were monitoring the beach.

When other beachgoers were using binoculars to scan the horizon, Lantz said, "that's when I noticed splashing." He swam out to the man after grabbing his boogie board and fins.

He was flopping on his back and looked weary, according to Lantz. "Lifeguards responded, pulling him from the water with the jetski," the lifeguard said. "He rested on my board until more help arrived."

The individual was carried to shore by Seaside Heights Water Rescue when they arrived on a jetski, according to Casole.

When the victim was carried to shore and transferred to the hospital for treatment, Casole added, he was only partially aware. He was unaware of any changes in the man's health.

Casole said a report of a swimmer in distress on Friday that led to a nearly five-hour search by the U.S. Coast Guard turned out to be unfounded.

"It appears they misjudged the swimmer’s proficiency," he said.
