Animal Cruelty in South Jersey

Brandon Leconey and Rebecca Halbach Arrested

After investigators looking into possible animal cruelty made the startling discovery of a youngster residing inside a residence with numerous dead dogs in Evesham, New Jersey, two adults have been charged.

A child's welfare and animal cruelty led to the arrests of Rebeccah Halbach, 35, and Brandon Leconey, 32.

New charges have been brought against a couple.

Brandon Leconey and Rebecca Halbach are accused of stealing thousands of dollars while pretending to work for an animal sanctuary.

The investigation, according to Evesham police, got started on Monday when officers were summoned to a house in the 600 block of Main Street after a witness saw sick and undernourished pets.

Investigators claim that what they discovered was despicable.

Dogs are kept in cages. Both live and dead dogs are kept in cages. There were dead animals all over the premises, according to Evesham Township Police Chief Walt Miller.

After speaking with the homeowners, the police reported finding the remains of 30 dead dogs. According to the police, up to 100 dogs may have passed away in the house, and some of them may have been buried there.

"Behind the home there was also a burial spot where there was a large number of dogs in various levels of decay," Miller said.

Along with several cats and rabbits, there were also discovered to be another 14 living canines.

One of the dogs had to be put to sleep, while nine others are receiving care at an animal hospital.

Police took a child who was residing in the house because of the unsanitary conditions.

That child is now in the care of the New Jersey Division of Child Protection & Permanency.
