Welles Circle in the Suncrest Village Apartment Complex

According to Manchester Police, a fire overtook a 16-unit apartment building on Welles Circle on Sunday, February 27, 2022 at 1:15 pm, displacing tenants and killing many pets.

According to a news release from township police, Building 18 of the Suncrest Village Apartment complex caught fire around 1:15 p.m. Sunday.

During the evacuation of occupants, authorities discovered a person stuck on a second-story balcony, according to police. The person, who has not been identified, was rescued at the scene by firemen, according to authorities.

Due to heavy winds, police also evacuated adjoining building 17 in the complex.

"At the time of the event, no injuries were reported, but multiple dogs perished in the fire," Manchester Police Capt. Vincent Manco said in a news release.

Detectives from the Manchester Police Department and the Ocean County Fire Marshal's Office are looking into the incident.

Fire departments from Manchester, Ridgeway, Whiting, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, Toms River #1, Pleasant Plains in Toms River, Berkeley, Bayville, Manitou Park in Berkeley, Cassville in Jackson and Pinewald Pioneer in Berkeley responded to the scene or contributed services.

First aiders from Manchester, Brick, Lakehurst and Toms River also responded.
