Flooding Closes Toms River Roads

Coastal Flood Warning Coastal Ocean, Ocean and Southeastern Burlington

On Thursday evening, flooding in Toms River was caused by a combination of high tides, drainage from Tuesday's nor'easter and storm surge, and Friday's incoming storm.

With the arrival of the second storm on Friday, flooding is likely to worsen. Rainfall is expected to be 1 to 2 inches, but wind gusts of up to 40 mph were predicted for the evening.

With more than a foot of water flooding Route 35 north and southbound, the barrier island was severely impacted. Low-lying regions along the Toms River and Barnegat Bay were also flooded.

According to a local, the water in the Silverton portion was 18 inches to over 2 feet deep in several places.

Authorities also closed Water Street and Irons Street, as well as Exit 81 on the northbound Garden State Parkway, due to flooding. Water was several inches deep on Irons Street, according to a witness, and water covered half of the municipal parking lot behind the Music Academy, as well as the bulkhead in Huddy Park.

An advisory issued soon before 5 p.m. claimed flooding was occurring on Windsor Avenue east of Fischer Boulevard. Ocean Avenue and River Avenue in Island Heights were inundated, according to the sheriff's office.

The Ocean County Sheriff's Office and the Toms River Office of Emergency Management issued multiple notifications Thursday afternoon, urging residents to avoid driving through flooded roadways once more.

The OEM advisory stated, "Please do not travel across flooded highways." "Turn around before you drown."
