Scam Alert in Ocean County

An Ocean County woman was able to avoid losing nearly $10,000 after almost becoming the victim of a warrant scam.

She received a call claiming there was an outstanding warrant for her arrest and was told the matter could be resolved by paying cash. After withdrawing the money, she headed to the courthouse — but before handing anything over, bank employees noticed red flags and advised her to pause.

She then went to the courthouse to confirm the claims and learned the entire situation was a scam.

The Ocean County Sheriff's office and the courts will never contact you by phone demanding cash to clear a warrant. They don’t accept payment over the phone, and we will never ask you to bring cash, gift cards, or cryptocurrency to settle a legal matter.

If you receive a call like this, hang up. Call their non-emergency line at 732-349-2010 or visit the courthouse in person to verify any claims before taking any action.
