Berkeley Township Beach was renamed Keith Pinto Beach at White Sands

On Friday, the first day of the Fourth of July weekend, the local beach community honored a lifeguard who sadly died after last summer's lightning strike to his lifeguard stand.

In honor of Keith Pinto, 19, who passed away while on duty in August 2021, more than 100 people met at White Sands Beach in South Seaside Park in Berkeley Township, Ocean County, to unveil a sign.

A beach where he guarded was renamed on Friday in honor of a fallen lifeguard.

Keith Pinto Beach at White Sands is the new name of the beach.

During an unexpected pop-up storm in August 2021, Pinto was hit by lightning and killed. He was adored by the locals and graduated from Toms River North High School in 2020.

The unveiling was attended by Pinto's parents, his brothers, sister, as well as locals and lifeguards from several towns along the Shore.

The "Keith Pinto Memorial Beach" sign has a picture of Pinto on his lifeguard stand.

Carmen Armato, Mayor of Berkeley Township also declared July 1 “Keith Pinto Day.”

Beaches along Barnegat Bay Island have installed early-warning lightning detection systems in the wake of Pinto’s Death.
