Barnegat 13 Year Old Shot

According to authorities, a 13-year-old child who was shot in the foot last weekend appears to have been the victim of an unintentional shooting.

On Saturday night, the event occurred at a public park on Bilge Avenue.

On March 12th around 10:30 p.m., Barnegat police department were dispatched to a Sextant Drive residence in the township's Settlers Landing community for a report of a kid with a gunshot wound.

The victim was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Hospital in Neptune, which is a regional trauma center, according to police.

The boy said he was alone in the park when he heard "a pop" and understood he had been hit. According to authorities, he claimed he didn't see anyone else there.

“A thorough investigation and search of the park revealed no blood nor any other evidence of a shooting occurring there. The agency also received no reports of gunshots. No firearm has been recovered,” police said. “Based on what is a continuing investigation, our agency believes this was an isolated, accidental shooting. All of the involved parties (who are juveniles) have been identified.”

Detectives are still working on the case and checking through social media posts about the incident. Anyone with knowledge or who has seen what transpired on social media earlier this week is asked to contact the Barnegat Township Police Department at 609-698-5000.
