The Toms River Little League Softball All-Stars' chances of winning a second championship have been dashed.

The 12-and-under softball team's season came to an end on Wednesday night in Bristol, Connecticut, when Delaware defeated them 16-3 in the elimination round of the Mid-Atlantic Region.

The team lost early to Delaware, which avenged a 6-2 loss earlier in the tournament, and was never able to catch up. The squad won the District 18, Section 3, and New Jersey state championships in just the second season of the Toms River Little League softball league.

For Toms River on Wednesday, Maya Ballaccomo went 2 for 3 with a run batted in while Kelly Forrester went 1 for 1 with a run batted in. On a walk, Emma Eisman had the other RBI.

In its region debut on Saturday, Toms River defeated Delaware 6-2. With five runs in the top of the sixth inning, the girls came back from a 2-1 deficit to win that game. Following a walk, Gianna Monetti fielded a ground ball, allowing Isabella Cino and Brielle Troy to advance.

Cino and Troy scored on a single by Ballaccomo to give Toms River a 3-2 advantage after Forrester was deliberately walked to load the bases. Eisman advanced to second on a passed ball, singled to bring in Forrester and Ballaccomo, and then scored on a double to center field by Kayla Rasmussen.

Cino, who had walked and stolen second base on Saturday, scored on a sacrifice by Troy to give Toms River its first run of the game.

Toms River lost 6-1 to Maryland on Tuesday. In the top of the fifth inning, Toms River scored when Ballaccomo doubled to center field and came around to score on Carolina Carr's two-out line drive to center, trimming Maryland's lead to 2-1. Toms River was unable to score any additional runs, and Maryland increased its lead with timely hitting in the bottom of the fifth to win 6-1.

Before playing Toms River again, Delaware won two games in the elimination round, defeating Washington, DC, 24-0 on Monday and New York, 3-2, on Tuesday.

The championship game is on Thursday night, and Delaware will play Maryland.
